Usually, big corporations and conglomerates have a Six Sigma unit inside, it may not be the usual Six Sigma so you will need some research.

Things you can look for to find a Six Sigma initiative:

  • Does this company have Six Sigma positions?
  • Is there any connection between their corporate culture and the Six Sigma skillset?
    • For instance, Amazon Leadership Principle Customer relates to SS.
  • What is the name of the department that deals with process improvement and quality?
  • How does it refer to the department that deals with process improvement in the annual financial report?

Six Sigma Department Names

Maybe they have a name for that program like DHL that has the First Choice department. Some companies like Amazon, and 3M, have programs named Six Sigma. Customer Excellence in J&J is responsible for process improvements based on customer interactions ensuring a high level of attention to patient safety, quality, time, cost, and compliance. At 3G Capital Partners companies (AB InBev, Kraft Heinz) have an internal employee community (kind of LinkedIn for employees), where titles are shown prominently. Six Sigma plays a big role in this group, and it is even mandatory to access higher positions. It is quite typical to have something related to customer-centricity, process optimization, or customer excellence.

Examples of Six Sigma Initiatives Inside Companies

In 3M there’s an inside culture where the top management buys project ideas and commits to Six Sigma Methodology. Plus they use Lean Six Sigma as a developmental tool for its people. Or the two-week Green Belt training on-site program and ownership of a project under a Black Belt. In terms of how they did the Black Belt training, at the Six Sigma training session, some of them with high potential are highlighted to be Black Belts.

Following the training session, everyone returns to their business unit for a six months period, later returns for a week of training to bolster. And in this training, there are people from all over the world who will be the future optimization project leaders. Companies like 3M do an investment to promote the Six Sigma culture and give the opportunity to accelerate people’s careers.

For instance in Deutsche DHL Consulting, the First Choice department it’s a customer focus initiative. They don’t have the Belt System, and what they have is a program called Masters with three levels: Master Bronze, Master Silver, and the Master Gold. After finishing they get a certificate signed by the CEO. It’s something of the inner culture that has a lot of value from a career perspective. The First Choice department reports directly to the CEO as part of corporate development.

Any good Six Sigma initiative it will always have the top management involved and supporting. Even in smaller companies like a startup, the founder needs to buy the idea and support for it to work. In a branch, you would need to have like the CEO or the CFO of a subsidiary that can be a champion product, that can be really owning this and supporting it to get the momentum going. 

Job Market Trends

Six Sigma professionals work very closely with senior executive leaders, looking at key performance indicators. Detects process disruptions, analyzes the root causes, and countermeasures the problem.
